Ming imperial guards long Dao “Ming Feng” (angular type)
铭锋 · 明御林军长刀 (方式)
AoFI‘s imperial guards long Dao is based on a rare antique long Dao in excellent standards.
’The name "铭锋"(Ming Feng) is homophonic to "明风" or "明锋", meaning the backbone of the Ming Dynasty and the sharpness of Ming Dynasty's weapons. The original meaning of the character "铭" is a kind of scripts carved on objects to warn oneself and record one's achievements.
The emergence of the long Dao is believed to have occurred after the Jiajing era (1522-), a period marked by significant trade between China and Japan, including a contracted import of swords. Additionally, the warfare along the coastal provinces against the Wokou (Japanese pirates) had a considerable impact on the use of Japanese swords in the Chinese military.
Compared to the Ming Dynasty's single-handed short sword, the Japanese double-handed long sword had an absolute advantage in length and force. Ming military strategists studied the distinctive characteristics of the Japanese sword and actively absorbed its strengths and techniques, ultimately developing the Ming long sword. The long Dao then also began to be widely promoted in the Northern Ming Army.
These expansively made swords were mainly equipped by the imperial guards including infantry and also had a considerable proportion among the weapons used by cavalry. Its functions were mainly twofold. Firstly, it was used by infantry to deal with enemy cavalry by chopping off their horses' legs or heads. Secondly, it served as a self-defense weapon for musket units to use when the enemy approached.
