Khitan Liao curved Dao
辽契丹弯刀
This is a single-handed curved saber used by the Khitan people during the Liao Dynasty, and it is also the first Liao saber product on the market to date. This Khitan Dao is closely modeled after an antique Liao Dynasty curved Dao in AoFI’s collection.

The blade of the Liao single-handed curved Dao often has a back edge at the tip, with a slightly curved blade and overall curvature. Compared with the single-handed Dao of the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Liao Dao appears to be more sturdy, with some ancient Dao having a thickness of up to 10mm, featuring a sturdy blade and designed as a cutting sword for an era of sophisticated heavy armor.
During the frequent wars of the Song, Liao, Xi Xia and Jin dynasties, weapons from various countries had mutual influences. Even one type of fittings was mixed and used on swords, sabers, or swordbreakers, demonstrating a utilitarian approach of achieving maximum effectiveness at minimal cost.
The common guard styles for the Liao Dao include the cross-shaped guard (which is also common on swordbreaker in the same peiod) and peach-like guard, which also often seen on Song sabers. The handle of the Dao has a relatively simple design compared to the handle of the Liao swordbreaker, and the most common design is the U-form pommel, which is consistent with the handle design of the Liao swordbreaker.
