Censorate Xie Zhi sword
明都察獬豸剑
Censorate Xie Zhi sword is a highly accurate replica of a well-preserved high-rank official Jian.
When discussing the Ming sword, the prominent features are the "云芝铜挡葫芦首, 七星连线鸭舌尖" or the cloud/Ganoderma shape brass guard, huge gourd-shaped pommel, inlaid seven stars, and the most typical Ming-style flat Gui 圭-shaped tip (another common type is the “duck tongue” tip), which is clearly distinct from the stabbier tip of the Qing sword. Both cutting edges run almost parallel to each other with subtle tapering and end in a roundish tip.
Xie Zhi 獬豸is the statutory symbol of the Ming Dynasty's Censorate officials. The scabbard is made of carefully selected walnut wood, coated with black lacquer and varnish to ensure its luster. The handle is a six-sided shape Cylinder with regular Persimmon Calyx-shaped rivet in the middle.
There are a total of 13 Xie Zhi patterns on the entire sword (12 on the scabbard and 1 on the pommel), symbolizing the thirteen local departments under the jurisdiction of the Censorate. This sword should be worn by the Censorate officials of the rank of Jin Du Yu Shi (equivalent to the top of today's inspectorate) or above.
