Tang Heng Dao (Elite Grade)
唐横刀
There are mainly two types of blade profiles for Tang swords, a straight chisel blade profile (切刃造, Kirihadukuri), and another type with a double-edged forward part of the blade (鋒諸刃造, Kissaki-moroha-zukuri).
Tang Heng Dao were one of the standard equipment for the main army of the Tang dynasty. The Dao type was inherited from the Han dynasty Huan Shou Dao (Ring Pommel Dao) during the early Tang period. In the middle and late Tang period, murals and excavations revealed Tang Hengyang Dao that completely abandoned the ring pommel feature, and instead, a hand rope was hang on the side of the handle.
The blade of the Tang Heng Dao is narrow and the Hand guard is relatively small, which is mostly used as a single-handed Dao for soldiers, such as imperial guards, bailiffs, catchers, city guards, patrol soldiers, etc.
As expensive military resources, weapons in the Tang dynasty were forbidden to be used as burial objects. Therefore, the unearthed specimens discovered today are very rare. Fortunately, many Tang swords were brought back to Japan as court treasures by Japanese envoys, and those rare Tang sword samples are still preserved in the Shosoin Depository 正仓院 at Nara.

Specifications
AoFI has compiled and analyzed original surviving Sui and Tang Dao preserved in Japan. The three lines representing the blade edge, the ridge, and the blade spine converge towards the cutting edge direction along with the central line, which balances the center of gravity and resolves the contradiction between blade strength and power transmission, which is the most standard Tang Heng Dao type. Moreover, the tip of the cutting edge (切先, Kissaki) is slightly convex in shape, rather than being straight. The curved part reserved more materials to meet the demands of intense combat, especially for repairing any damage sustained to the Kissaki.
