Ming Zhan Ma Dao (Elite Grade)
明斩马刀
The Zhan Ma Dao, also known as the Horse Chopper Saber, is a formidable double-handed cutting weapon that was specifically designed for elite infantry units to combat enemy cavalry. It has a long history since 2000 years ago and was commonly used to counter the Khitan and Jurchen cavalries in the Song dynasty.
The measurement of Ming Zhan Ma Dao is a 1:1 reproduction of an original Ming Dao.
After the Ming Dynasty's collapse, Zheng Chenggong advocated for the use of the Zhan Ma Dao in his army to fight against the powerful Eight Banners cavalry of the Qing Dynasty. The smooth curved blade makes Zhan Ma Dao extremely easy to wield, and it can easily sever horse legs, causing significant damage.
In “Practical Record for Military Experience” that when Zheng Chenggong (1624-1662) led his army on a northward march to Nanjing, he deployed a vanguard force of 200 elite heavy armored infantry soldiers equipped with Zhan Ma Dao to successfully destroy 800 Qing cavalry.
Zhan Ma Dao also saw major action in the Siege of Fort Zeelandia between the Zheng army and the Dutch. It was extensively documented in the works of the Dutch, such as "Verwaeloosde Formosa", “Meijensteen‘s record ’”, and "Reise nach Java, Formosa, Vorder-Indien und Ceylon 1659-1668".
